The Audi quattro Cup is one of the biggest and most popular tournament series for amateur golfers: just this year more than 80,000 players participated. Golf pro Nick Dougherty now presented the winners’ trophies to the victorious teams of the world finale in Tenerife. The first registrations for 2009 have already been submitted.
Enrique Cornejo and Norberto de Elizalde from Argentina (group A, team handicap 0 to 18) as well as David and Evan Purnama from Indonesia (group B, team handicap 19 to 36) are the winners of a thrilling finale in Spain. 120 participants from 48 countries, including eight German golfers, had qualified for the showdown. The world finale traditionally marks the conclusion of the worldwide qualification tournaments in which amateur golfers from all over the world play at the invitation of regional Audi partners.
The finale at the five-star resort “Abama” in the west of Tenerife was a highlight for all participants not only on account of the sporting competition. Besides interesting contacts with golfers from all over the world the players experienced the fascinating show of the British trick golfer Geoff Swain as well as a golf clinic with PGA pro Nick Dougherty. The golfer, who was born in Liverpool, reached the top ten of the U.S. Open last year and presented the trophies and prizes to the winners of the 2008 Audi quattro Cup.
The tournament series sporting the four rings was staged for as much as the 18th time this year, and its popularity has been rising consistently: in its debut year of 1991 the series featured 61 tournaments with 7,000 participants while in the season that just ended 19,000 golfers just in Germany played in over 150 tournaments for the chance to compete in the world finale. Around the globe nearly 80,000 people participated in the qualification in 750 tournaments. The best German team at the end of the season were Hans-Georg Gutekunst and Marko Thiel on position two in group B.
The positive trend continues: the first registrations for the 19th Audi quattro Cup, which starts next spring, have already been received. Again, the tournament series will be one of the highlights in the golfing commitment of AUDI AG, which will be more extensive than ever next year. In addition to promoting amateur sport, the role of Presenting Sponsor of the “HypoVereinsbank Ladies German Open” as well as the support of further international top-calibre tournaments are part of the portfolio.
