Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A, a fully owned subsidiary of AUDI AG, is pursuing the objective of consolidating its outstanding position in the sports car segment. Audi is supporting Lamborghini technically and operatively in this, without undermining the autonomy of the brand.
The plant at which its legendary sports cars are built is in Sant'Agata Bolognese, near the city of Bologna. The latest model with the world-famous bull emblem is called the "Murciélago". It bears the proud name of a bull whose life was spared by the legendary torero Rafael Molina "Lagartijo" on 5th October, 1879 following a gruelling battle of wits. The bull was used for breeding, fathering a new race of fighting bull. Interestingly, "murciélago" is the Spanish word for "bat".
The predecessor of the Murciélago, the Diablo, enjoyed the reputation of being the fastest production sports car allowed on public roads. The Murciélago now takes up its mantle in spectacular style. Its appearance is even more athletic, its shape even more muscular, its technical data even more impressive. "There's probably no other production model that possesses such an overwhelming aura of speed," wrote "Der Spiegel". The carbon fibre body follows the principles of a jet aircraft, and it has engine data to match: the twelve-cylinder engine with a displacement of 6.2 litres has an output of 426 kW (580 bhp), develops torque of 650 Nm and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is over 330 km/h, faster than any other production car.
